Executive Perspectives & Ground Reality
If you took all the money sitting in your corporate bank accounts today and used it immediately to pay down your loans, how much debt would still be left unpaid?
A business has ₹50 crore in bank term loans but holds ₹60 crore in treasury liquid mutual funds. Its net debt is negative ₹10 crore (net cash positive), placing it in a position of supreme financial strength.
Short-term credit lines: ₹10 crore. Long-term bank loans: ₹35 crore. Total gross debt = ₹45 crore. Cash and liquid bank balances = ₹15 crore. Net Debt = ₹45 crore − ₹15 crore = ₹30 crore.
Looking only at gross debt can be misleading. A company carrying substantial debt may actually be conservative if it maintains large liquidity buffers to weather market disruptions.
Net Debt to EBITDA is the gold-standard leverage ratio used by credit rating agencies and M&A buyers. Ratios consistently below 2.5x are generally considered institutional-grade.
What Net Debt Is Not
Net Debt and Accessible Liquid Cash
Net debt deducts cash from total debt, but cash held in project escrow accounts, debt service reserves, or foreign subsidiaries may not be freely available to pay down debt.
Net Debt and Lender Loan Covenants
Bank loan covenants often enforce restrictions on gross debt facilities regardless of fluctuating cash balances held on the balance sheet.
Net Debt and Debt Maturity Timelines
A low net debt calculation does not resolve liquidity emergencies if large debt facilities mature before illiquid assets can be sold.
Net Debt and Average Working Capital Borrowing
Measuring cash on a single reporting day can understate typical net borrowing if the company delays supplier payments until after quarter end.
